About Type 1 Explained
Empowering newly diagnosed adolescent diabetics through education and community support
Our Story
About the Founder
Type 1 Explained was founded by Avani Bharadwa, who is currently an engineering student at Northwestern. In September 2021, her 7-year-old brother, Akash, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Within his first week of being diagnosed, we had already begun to struggle with the ignorance surrounding Type 1 Diabetes. Peers would ask him why he was getting juice in the middle of an activity, classmates told him how lucky he was for getting candy during the school day and even teachers began to treat him differently.
These incidents occurred while he was adjusting to his new condition, only making the adjustment period worse. Our family believes the way to combat ignorance is through education.
Type 1 Explained helps eliminate the burden on the family of educating their community. We strive to one day see diabetics empowered by sharing their story.
